The Haute Route Skiing Classic: Chamonix to Zermatt on Skis
The ski Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt is one of the world's great ski journeys. Not a piste route, not a resort circuit, but a seven-day traverse of the highest and most glaciated terrain in the Alps, moving from hut to hut across a 160-kilometre route that crosses six high passes and descends more than 13,000 metres of vertical. The ski version was first completed in the 1890s and has been refined over 130 years into a route that is demanding but accessible to strong, experienced backcountry skiers with proper guidance.
The itinerary
The standard route takes 6–7 days and is typically split into the following stages, though guide companies offer variations depending on snow conditions and party ability.
Day 1: Chamonix to the Refuge d'Argentière (2771 m) or onward to the Cabane du Col du Lautaret. The departure from Chamonix involves riding the Grands Montets cable car to the top station and skinning or navigating the Argentière Glacier system.
Day 2: Crossing the Col du Chardonnet (3323 m) or the Fenêtre de Saleina, with descent into the Swiss canton of Valais toward Verbier or the Cabane du Trient (3170 m). This is the first major glaciated col crossing, involving serious terrain and significant avalanche exposure depending on conditions.
Day 3: Crossing toward the Cabane de Prafleuri (2624 m) via the Col de Riedmatten or the Pas de Chèvres — the descent to Arolla, then re-ascent toward the Cabane des Vignettes CAS (3160 m). The Cabane des Vignettes is the emotional and logistical heart of the ski Haute Route: perched above the Otemma Glacier, surrounded by high peaks, staffed by keepers who have seen thousands of Haute Route parties come through.
Day 4: The Otemma Glacier crossing, ascending through the Col de l'Evêque (3392 m) or Col du Mont Brûlé and descending to the Italian side before the re-ascent to the Cabane de Bertol CAS (3311 m) at dusk.
Day 5: The Tête Blanche (3724 m) crossing — the high point of the ski route — in the pre-dawn silence, with the first light catching the Matterhorn ahead. The descent to Zermatt via the Stockji Glacier and the Schönbiel basin, or via the Cervin and Rossier Hut variant toward Cervinia.
Day 6: Rest day in Zermatt or a summit bid on the Breithorn (4164 m) — the most accessible 4000 m peak in the Alps from Zermatt, reached by cable car to the Klein Matterhorn and a short glacier ski.
Safety considerations
The ski Haute Route is a serious mountaineering undertaking in winter conditions. The route crosses multiple significant avalanche paths, glaciated terrain with crevasse hazard, and high cols where weather changes can be rapid and severe.
The standard advice: hire a qualified mountain guide. UIAA/IFMGA guides with specific Haute Route experience know the conditions, the alternatives, and the decision points that are not in any guidebook. Unguided parties with glacier experience sometimes complete the route successfully; they also account for a disproportionate share of the accidents that occur.
Beacon, shovel, and probe are mandatory for all party members. Rope for the glacier sections. Weather communication: the MeteoSwiss and Météo-France mountain forecasts for the relevant days should be checked at every evening stop.
Timing
The prime Haute Route ski season is March to early May. February conditions are colder and can be excellent but with more avalanche risk from fresh winter snowpack; late April and May offer more stable snow but increasingly wet afternoon conditions. Most guide companies run fixed-date departures from late March through mid-April.
Gear
A ski-touring setup (pin or frame binding, appropriate boot, climbing skins) is standard. Many guides recommend a slightly stiffer boot than most day-touring setups — the glacier descents and some of the steeper pass terrain reward downhill control. A medium-weight pack (8–10 kg with overnight gear) keeps the climbing manageable; heavier packs punish you on the long days.
What can go wrong
The Haute Route statistics show an accident rate that has been consistently higher than equivalent Alpine tours of similar length. The concentration of risks is on the glaciated cols: the Chardonnet crossing, the approaches to the Bertol, and the Tête Blanche are the zones where crevasse falls, avalanche debris, and whiteout navigation combine in a technical environment.
The most common serious accident scenario is a party attempting a col crossing in poor visibility after a storm, without a GPS track, on a large glaciated plateau. The Otemma Glacier in low cloud with a fresh 30 cm of snow is a disorienting environment even for experienced mountaineers; the correct response is to wait at the Cabane des Vignettes for conditions to improve, which requires a level of schedule flexibility that not all parties have.
Planning the booking
Guide companies offering fixed-date Haute Route departures include Wilderness Travel, Mountain Travel Sobek, and Chamonix-based guide services such as Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix. Private guide hire gives more flexibility; the guide brings the local knowledge and the equipment competence that makes the route genuinely safe. Guide hire cost for 7 days runs approximately EUR 3,000–4,500 for a group of 2–4, depending on guide and services included.
Hut booking for the ski Haute Route follows the same principle as summer: call or email as early as possible, especially for peak March–April dates. The Cabane des Vignettes is typically the most competitive reservation on the route; call in January for March dates.
The equipment list
The gear required for the ski Haute Route is more specialised than for most alpine ski touring. At the binding end: pin bindings (Tech or Dynafit) for the skinning days, with ski boots that have a tour mode with genuine flex; or frame bindings (Marker Duke/Baron) for those who prioritise descent performance. The Haute Route's descent sections — from the Col de l'Evêque, from the Tête Blanche to Zermatt — are long, at times steep, and on snow that varies from perfect spring corn to chopped up tracked slopes.
Avy safety: beacon (tested before departure), shovel with telescoping handle, probe minimum 240 cm. Glacier kit: rope (40–50 m for two people), two prussiks, ice axe. The glacier sections between huts involve crevassed terrain on the Otemma and Pigne d'Arolla approaches; a guide who knows the route can thread the crevasse zones, but a solo party without this knowledge faces genuine crevasse hazard.
The pack weight for a guided Haute Route is typically 10–15 kg depending on the services included. Guide companies that carry group gear reduce individual loads; self-guided parties carry more. The weight is on your back on the extended skin approaches; optimising it before departure makes a meaningful difference over six days.
Acclimatisation and fitness
Most Haute Route accidents involve fit, experienced athletes who are underprepared for the combination of altitude, effort, and technical terrain over consecutive days. The route starts at 1035 m in Chamonix and reaches 3537 m at the Col de l'Evêque on Day 3; the altitude gain over the first three days is rapid by any standard.
Pre-trip fitness training: 8–12 weeks of regular steep uphill aerobic work (stair climbers, hiking with pack) and 4–6 days of ski touring at altitude before the Haute Route in the same season. Arriving at the start having not ski-toured since the previous season and having done no altitude work in the previous month is under-preparation for a demanding week.
